The hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) is one of the oldest and most versatile plants known to man. Hemp has been cultivated over a period of many centuries in almost every European country. It once represented a significant raw material source for the production of rope, canvas, textile, paper, building materials and oil products. More recently it has become famous as a fantastic food plant producing oil-rich seed and in our opinion the most important ingredient, Cannabidiol (CBD).
After a slow start, this spring our hemp is now almost ready for harvesting. We time the harvest to when the plants are at their peak full of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. This year we sowed the hemp on a very nice free draining drumlin hill in Co. Monaghan and it has grown very well, better in fact than when grown on marginal land as in previous years. The lower lying fields are inclined to flood especially in a wet year. Hemp does not like to have wet feet. Having learned our lessons the hard way this year crop is growing well on the light windy hill here in Clones despite the cold wet summer.
It won’t be long now before we take out the harvester, dust it down, give it the ‘magic rub’ and put it to work. Once we get the harvesting underway this year juice will start to flow, we have a relatively short window in which to harvest and juice the crop for the year. But each year since 2013 we have managed to plant more than the year before and our juicing output has increased 20 fold since we started. Let us hope this heat wave that has been predicted comes true and our harvest is a successful one.
